LIFE

In his piece The Theologians, Jorge Luis Borges presents two rival scholars: Aurelian and John of Pannonia. At the center of their dispute lies the heresy of eternal recurrence of the same. The theologians are adversaries in their attempts to refute the heresy; however, as they compete every time for the same position, together they give a performance of the very heresy they are trying to destroy. The endgame of the short story revolves around another, equally heretical theory: the opposite view that every event can occur absolutely only once. Equally heretical, because both doctrines belie the unique and critical event of Christ’s death at the cross and his subsequent resurrection. The positing and quoting of theological statements—their taking place, their repetition—begin to interfere with the laws they describe, and in the end the two men are gathered into one figure, indifferent between believer and heretic, accuser and accused, indifferent to the mind of God. Perhaps the polemical rapport between Jacques Derrida and Giorgio Agamben can be understood along similar, theological lines.
